Investigating Hair Loss

Dr Fenton believes that before prescribing any treatments for hair loss, the most crucial aspect is identifying the underlying causes.

Hair loss investigations

  • Physical scalp examination
  • Tests; Blood tests to evaluate levels of various nutrients such as iron, zinc, folate or vitamin B12. Also blood tests are taken to examine hormone levels and the function of the thyroid gland which can have an impact on hair loss. Scalp and hair biopsies are also taken. In female patients, it can sometimes be necessary to perform an ovarian scan. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between scarring alopecia and alopecia areata and Dr David Fenton will arrange fora scalp biopsy if necessary to diagnose the problem.
  • Counselling; Hair loss can be the result of an underlying stress or anxiety and Dr Fenton counsels patients to help identify any underlying causes, as well as counselling for the ongoing psychological impact of hair loss.
